Sony is adding high-definition movie recording to its digital camera line with the introduction of the Cyber-shot DSC-T500 model. This 10-megapixel camera features wide and full-screen 720p movie recording at 30 fps.

The movie function is based on the MPEG4 AVC/H.264 codec for video compression and stereo audio. Benefits of the format include high-quality video as well as small file sizes that are easy to download, upload and share. The camera can continuously record a video clip up to 10 minutes in length. It also features a dual photo and video capture mode. Simply press the photo button while in movie mode and capture up to three photos with no recording interruption.

The T500 camera integrates a wide (16:9), 3.5-inch touch screen for easy navigation, framing and viewing in strong light conditions. It has a Carl Zeiss 5x optical zoom lens with a wide field of view (33 – 165 mm, 35 mm equivalency). Sony is introducing its full-frame DSLR α900 camera, aimed at serious photo enthusiasts looking for traditional SLR performance with the added benefits of digital photography.

It is designed to deliver ultra-fine picture quality with the world's highest resolution, 24.6-megapixel, 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor and fast image processing with a new dual BIONZ processing engines. The camera is also the first to have a body-integrated image stabilization system for a full-frame sensor with Sony's SteadyShot Inside anti-shake system.

The camera's newly-developed, body-integrated SteadyShot Inside unit achieves an anti-shake effect equivalent to shutter speeds faster by 2.5 to 4 stops. This new unit provides stabilization for Sony, Minolta and Konica-Minolta wide angle, large-aperture lenses, which is difficult for lens-integrated systems.

It has a 3-inch, Xtra Fine LCD screen (921K) makes it possible to check focus and image quality with accuracy. It incorporates an easy-to-see display with a quick navigation menu to easily access common functions without interrupting your creative flow. A backlit LCD panel sits on top of the camera and displays key settings.

Other key features aimed to expand creative options include the Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) with five levels of user-selectable correction as well as DRO bracketing for enhanced scene analysis and graduation optimization. EV bracketing with ±2EV range makes it easy to create high dynamic range composite images.

The DSLR-A900 body will be available in November for about $3,000 along with related accessories.

Canon Digital Rebel XSi Digital Camera

The XSi is more of an evolution than a revolution; the new features it adds over previous Digital Rebels are useful (and generally well executed), but none of them add that much to the experience of using the camera. The live view makes point-and-shooters feel more at home, but focusing in that mode is a pain, as the camera has to flip the mirror back up to meter. The increase in resolution is also nice, but 10 to 12 megapixels is not a huge leap. And the optical image stabilization on the kit lens is definitely a good addition, but there are plenty of other SLRs that offer similar features. So, nothing in the XSi screams out for XTi users to upgrade.

But little changes aren't a problem if the original package was good, and the XTi was a great camera. So the XSi is a great camera as well; it is easy to use and shoots great photos. It may not be a mold-breaking revolution, but it's a good upgrade to the XTi and a great camera in its own right.

Olympus E-420

Olympus announced the entry-level E-420 Four Thirds system DSLR in conjunction with a Zuiko Digital 25mm 1:2.8 'pancake' lens equivalent to a 50mm on a 35mm model and has been sending that out with its review samples. While ideally suited for portraiture, the flagging up of new lens alongside camera raises the suspicion that there's no actually too much that's exciting about the 'new' E-420 – despite the new model's very competitive £330 body-only price point in the UK (by way of comparison the E-410 retailed for around £500 this time last year). Whilst it still offers a compact and lightweight chassis that's ideal for lugging the E-420 around abroad – and in fact I took the camera to Japan for the duration of our test where it nestled unobtrusively and comfortably in my shoulder bag – that alone wouldn't nudge me toward packing the camera in preference to say its direct competitors, the Canon's EOS-450D or Nikon's D60.

Though there are various under-the-bonnet performance tweaks which we'll come to later, it at first appears Olympus has rather taken a 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' approach to this user-friendly upgrade – and is claiming anyone can be up and shooting with the camera without needing to crib from the manual. Just as well, as Olympus had neglected to include one with our review sample. For the record, like its E-410 predecessor you get continuous Live View on the LCD, which has increased in size from 2.5-inches to 2.7-inches and with the same 230k dot resolution, as one of the camera's specification highlights, aside from the now standard (at the entry-level) 10 effective megapixels resolution, the same again as that offered by the E-410. You also get 28 shooting modes in total while dual slots for both XD and Compactflash make a return, as does Olympus' grandly named Supersonic Wave Filter dust prevention system. Although this is active on start up, it thankfully doesn't noticeably delay proceedings and you can firing off your first image in just over a second which is fast enough for any consumer DSLR.

The Emerging Talent award will recognize 4 winners and 16 runners-up from both categories to commend those aged under 30 for work that possess outstanding expressive power and conveys the energy of youth. Additionally, this year marks the 75th anniversary of the NIKKOR brand of lenses. To properly commemorate this event, a special prize will be awarded to the outstanding work that places second after the Grand Prize winner.

How to apply

Entries submitted in print by conventional mail

Entries accepted in print are color or black-and-white photographs taken with 35mm film cameras, Advanced Photo System (APS) film cameras and digital still cameras, not including medium or large format digital cameras. Images that have been digitally edited with software are also accepted. Each entrant can submit up to 2 entries for each category (a total of 4 prints), with print dimensions of 19 x 24cm (8 x 10 inches) to 28 x 36cm (11 x 14 inches).

Please download and print out an official Entry Form, available from July 10th, from the Nikon Photo Contest International 2008-2009 Web site (http://www.nikon-npci.com), make a photocopy of the official form or contact your nearest Nikon dealer for details on how to obtain an official Entry Form. The official Entry Form is available in 10 languages (Japanese / English / German / French / Spanish / Italian / Portuguese / Korean / Simplified Chinese / Traditional Chinese) and the rules and process of entry via conventional mail are explained fully within.

Entries submitted as JPEG images via the Internet

Accepted JPEG images are color or black-and-white graphic files taken with digital still cameras (not including medium or large format digital cameras) and scanned data of photographs taken with 35mm film cameras or Advanced Photo System (APS) film cameras. Images that have been digitally edited with software are also accepted. Each entrant can submit two JPEG images for each category (a total of 4 images), with a maximum size for each JPEG image of 10MB. JPEG images exceeding this size must be compressed to a maximum of 10MB prior to submission.

Judging and announcement of winners

Photographers working internationally will be appointed by Nikon Corporation as judges to undertake selection of the winning photographs. And if you don't have a CCTV system, you've probably thought about getting one. After all, you've worked hard and you want to protect your investment. But have you thought about the legal issues involved with video surveillance?

Now before you go and rip your cameras down, relax. In the United States, retailers are generally allowed to use video surveillance, whether or not their customers and employees are aware they are being watched. It's not a bad idea to put up a sign letting people know that the store is under video surveillance. First, it's a good deterrent to theft. Second, no one could say they didn't know they were being videotaped. An even better idea is to have a video monitor showing some of the camera shots so people don't think you're bluffing. And hey, the kids who come into your store will have fun seeing themselves on TV.

Recording audio, whether it is a part of a video or not, can put you into a questionable legal arena. If you run into a situation, such as employee theft or a personnel issue where you need to present evidence in court, it may be thrown out if you have recorded audio without the consent of the people involved. As with the videotaping, you can let people know their conversations may be recorded by posting a sign. Just remember; this may put off some customers, but if you believe there is a high risk of robbery, it can be a valuable tool.

There are some other things to avoid when using video surveillance to protect your business. If there is an expectation of privacy, you can't have cameras in those areas. For instance, if you need to record an office, make sure that you let your employees know that they must not change in there. If there is an issue, then that area will be off limits because your employees will expect privacy. You never want to have a camera in a bathroom or a dressing room. Hopefully, the reasons are obvious. You can place cameras directly outside of these areas, but make sure they can't see into them.

The EX-Z9 is an 8.1 megapixel camera sporting a 3x optical zoom and a 2.6-inch LCD. Emphasizing ease of use, the camera features 23 "Best Shot" scene/situation preset modes and an "Easy" mode that reduces the number of user-adjustable parameters to a mere three.

Like many of Casio's latest models, the Z9 also features a YouTube-optimized video capture mode aimed to simplify getting web-res videos from your camera and onto the internet. Though there's apparently no optical image stabilization, the Z9 does advertise Anti Shake DSP – an ISO boost digital stabilization system, presumably.

Generally speaking, the cameras that come built in to today's mobiles are less than astounding, but a recent Sony Ericsson patent application could make 'em a bit more worthwhile. The patent describes a scenario where a user could input commands by simply gesturing in front of the lens, and the phone would then be able to decode certain actions and react accordingly. Apparently, one could answer a phone (in handsfree fashion, of course) from across the room with just a flick of the wrist, and tracks streaming over Bluetooth could be controlled by waving your hands like you just don't care. Granted, users would still have to be where the handset could see them, but aside from that, the idea's not too shabby.

This handheld camcorder / PMP conglomerate boasts a 2.4-inch 480 x 234 resolution LCD, a 5-megapixel CMOS sensor capable of snagging stills and VGA-quality video, between 32MB and 128MB of internal storage space and an SD / MMC expansion slot to boot. You'll also find PictBridge support, USB 2.0 connectivity, an AV output, some form of red-eye reduction and a rechargeable Li-ion cell. Interestingly, we're not told what types of files this thing will actually support, but let's just say that's reason enough for you to avoid this like the plague, cool?

Fuji Finepix Z100FD

We first saw Fuji's Finepix Z100fd back in July, but now that camera-buying season is in full force, PhotographyBlog has taken it out for a review and pronounced it a worthy candidate for your hard-earned cash. Of particular note was the 5X optical zoom, which is better than most other cams in this price range, and the image stabilization and face detection systems, which worked admirably. The camera also drew praise for its slick diagonally-opening lens cover and illuminated Z logo. On the downside, the Z100fd was fairly pokey to store shots and didn't offer the absolute highest image quality, but those apparently aren't dealbreakers -- the folks at PB say overall, the Z100fd is "a fashion camera that isn't simply a matter of style over substance."

EXPOSURE

As the A820 is considered an entry-level digital camera, it gets a pretty straightforward feature set, with no manual exposure modes. On the mode dial, you'll find the auto mode, movie mode, SP mode, portrait, digital zoom, red-eye reduction, digital image stabilization mode, and baby mode. The SP position on the mode dial lets you use "manual" mode, which is essentially a program auto mode where you can change the ISO, white balance, etc. You can also choose the other scene modes while in SP mode: landscape, sport, night, natural light, beach, snow, fireworks, sunset, underwater, flower, party, museum, and text.

Movie Mode
